Taking care of business...

Leaving yet another meeting...=-( On the bright side I rode my Tikit to get there which was fun. With the magic of performance fabrics you can ride your bike and still stay comfortable while looking somewhat presentable.

Well it depends. YMMV as they say. If you live say in a city where the streets are cleaned at night and you have a reasonable distance to go or a reasonable way to combine with other transport then ok you can look "reasonably" smart. But if you live 15 miles from the city, its raining, the roads are dirty and muddy, the vehicles passing you emit black smoke and spray you with muddy water, there are some hard hills on the way ... try looking smart arriving by bike then - and try doing it most days for years. What are these performance fabrics Vik ? I haven't found ANY clothes that can look continue looking smart under that kind of pressure.

No doubt Andy that there are lots of situations where it would be far more challenging to show up looking decent after riding a bike to a meeting. I wouldn't suggest that was possible under any circumstance. OTOH - about 50% of the year where I live it would be possible without much effort - like right now.

My thought is if people try to find the perfect 100% solution they'll never use bikes because, as you point out, you can always come up with scenarios that don't work. However, if people start looking for opportunities to ride their bikes and start doing so 10% of the time - maybe working their way up to 50% of the time that would be wonderful.

Of course solutions that work in Calgary, Alberta will not necessarily work for another spot on the planet as environments differ greatly, but clearly people are riding bikes just about everywhere to get to work using innovative ideas and solving problems locally.

BTW - in that photo I had ridden my bike 25kms to the next town at around 27kph up several large hills and arrived dry/presentable for a mtg.

Well I don't know how you do it Vik - I've struggled for years (and continue to) to not look like a homeless vagrant :-). I remember being in London on the way to a meeting once and I couldn't find the place I was going and stopped to ask and two people completely ignored me and walked on past - probably because of how scruffy I look when cycling.

Keep up the good work showing cycling as cool and desirable - this is the way forwards I think to get more people on bikes.

I'm curious as to what performance fabrics you wear too?

IMO, the potential problem isn't how good you look, but how you smell ;-) After only a 5 mile ride to work I am sweaty and a bit stinky (though since I'm female, maybe it's more accurate to say I "glow"). Maybe if one is really fit you don't sweat/smell as much.
